Why is the sports cap made of plastic and not stainless steel?
Your teeth. Klean Kanteen chose polypropylene #5 because it has no known leaching characteristics and is softer if you hit a bump on the trail. If you'd rather avoid plastic altogether, a stainless steel screw-on lid is available as an accessory. Can I put hot liquids in my Klean Kanteen?
No. Klean Kanteen bottles are single walled and not for use with hot liquids. Warm beverages can be used at personal comfort level. The single-walled construction allows for more volume and the option to put your Kanteen on a flame. Can I put my Kanteen in the freezer?

Great for kids lunch boxes November 23, 2008
I needed a better solution for drinks in my daughters lunch boxes. I gave up juice boxes because of the price and the amount of trash they put into our environment. I had bought plastic water bottles to fill with our own water, juice, milk etc, only to find out that these bottles were made with chemicals which could end up in the girls drinks. The 12oz Klean Kanteen water bottles are great! They are a perfect size for the lunch boxes, they don't leak and I know that my daughters drinks are chemical free. We have had them for a month and they have no dents or scratches. I would highly recommend the Klean Kanteen water bottles!
 Klean Kanteen vs. Sigg November 23, 2008
Well, recently I lost my sigg bottle, which I loved. I had been a little bit dubious about drinking out of aluminum, so I decided to give Klean Kanteen a shot. The size of the bottle is quite nice, and the poly loop cap forms a reliably tight seal. A couple of issues I have is that the poly loop cap can actually be difficult to grab onto due to its shape. So I have struggled to get it off quite a few times. Sigg has a better design for the cap. Also, the mouth is much larger on Klean Kanten, designed for ice cubes. When I drink from the bottle, the top of the mouth piece hits me in the nose. Sigg also is a better design in this regard. So, the only real advantage, in my opinion is the stainless steel. I wish Sigg would start making a steel bottle, because it would probably be a much better design.

Awesome water bottle, great colors. COlors do get scratched easily, but it's still fun to mix them up with plain metal ones, and helps keep them separate when each family member has one. Very light-weight.

The Klean Kanteen bottles are made of stainless steel with a sturdy screw-on cap. The company stresses the benefits of stainless steel as superior to plastic because you don't have to worry about BPA (a toxic chemical) leeching into your drink. They also promote the wide mouth of the bottle, which allows you to put ice cubes inside. Finally, they claim to be ecologically friendly because the bottle can be recycled.
On the positive side, this is a well-constructed product. The bottle is very solid and the cap fits very well. I've been using it for several days with no leaks. The design isn't exactly dramatic, but it's clean and pleasing enough to the eye.
Unfortunately, I find that the Klean Kanteen has some liabilities and competitive disadvantages as well. The cap must be completely unscrewed every time you want a drink, so it's not good for trips to the gym or hiking. Worse, because the mouth is so wide, it is not comfortable to drink directly from the bottle. You'll want to pour the contents into a glass first or risk dribbling all over yourself. This essentially limits its usefulness to lunch boxes or perhaps overnight camping trips. The stainless steel prevents you from seeing how much is left inside, and if you brought multiple bottles, you won't be able to tell milk from soda without opening each one.
I should add that the manufacturer does sell a sports cap that makes the bottle much more useful for joggers, hikers, etc. The problem with that is that it raises the price of the 27 oz. bottle to more than 20 dollars. I recently purchased a plastic CamelBak BPA-Free Better Water Bottle with Bite Valve for less than half that and it has been the superior product. It is BPA free, comes with a sports cap, allows me to see the contents, and is easier to clean. All in all, it's difficult for me to recommend the Klean Kanteen. It's not that it's a poor product, but it is far more costly than the alternative without offering any real advantage.
Great Bottles November 19, 2008
Love these bottles. This is large enough to take me through a couple of sets of tennis, my daughter through an intense run up some very steep and long steps, or my son's football practice. The biggest drawback is that they no longer come with an insulated sleeve. I have some older ones which came with them and they are great. However, the loop cap was not available at that time and it makes carrying so much easier when hands are full or one is concentrating on running. They clean up easily and the water tastes fine. No mess for the environment and the paint is water based. I called the company. My extended family is getting these as green Christmas presents.
